Open Release of Grok-1

Unlike some other chatbot models, Grok is also text-only; it can’t understand the content of images, audio or videos, for example. But xAI has previously said that its intention is to enhance the underlying model to these modalities, and Musk has pledged to add art-generation capabilities to Grok along the lines of those currently offered by ChatGPT. RLHF is quite good at “teaching” models to follow instructions — but not perfect. Like other models, Grok is prone to hallucinating, sometimes offering misinformation and false timelines when asked about news. And these can be severe — like wrongly claiming that the Israel–Palestine conflict reached a cease-fire when it hadn’t.

Over stages of team development introduction to business the past few months, we’ve been continuously improving Grok on the 𝕏 platform. Today, we’re introducing the next evolution of the Grok experience, featuring a redesigned interface and new features. To get started with using the model, follow the instructions at github.com/xai-org/grok. This is the raw base model checkpoint from the Grok-1 pre-training phase, which concluded in October 2023.

Grok vs. ChatGPT: How Are They Different?

Grok is powered by a large language model (LLM) called Grok-1, in the same way that ChatGPT is powered by GPT-4. An immediate competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, as well as Copilot (formerly Bing Chat), Google Bard, and Anthropic Claude-2, Grok promises to address “spicy” topics such as political views with more humor than its artificially intelligent peers. Pious evangelists of the billionaire refer to its USP as being “anti-woke” or “based”, which translates to “less left-wing in my non-left-wing opinion” for those fortunate souls not chronically online. As an AI that uses an LLM (large language model), Grok can do many of the same things that ChatGPT and Bard are capable of, including answering simple questions, completing writing tasks, coming up with ideas, and much more. Similar to other AI tools like ChatGPT, Grok is an AI chatbot that uses LLM (large language model) technology that trains the AI by feeding it a vast amount of information from all across the internet.

“Fun” mode and “regular” mode

Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini are currently in beta on 𝕏, and we are also making both models available through our enterprise API later this month. On November 4th, the AI research and development firm gave us a top-level statement regarding the vision for the new AI chatbot, what it will do, and how it will do it. With access now available to the public, but limited to paying X users, you’ll see the following screen during your sign-up process. There is no free version of Grok at this time; it is only available to people who pay $16 a month for a premium subscription to X. From a user interface standpoint, Grok can also handle multiple queries simultaneously and users can toggle between those answers, as shown in a video demonstration by xAI co-founder Toby Pohlen.

This enables Grok to have “real-time knowledge of the world,” according to the company, which gives it a “massive advantage over other models,” as Musk put it. Released in November of 2023, it is now available to users with a Premium+ subscription to the social media platform X. We are also releasing Grok-2 and Grok-2 mini to developers through our new enterprise API platform later this month. Our upcoming API is built on a new bespoke tech stack that allows multi-region inference deployments for low-latency access across the world.

  1. Unlike OpenAI’s chatbot, which has guardrails over what it can say, xAI said that Grok has a “rebellious streak” and would answer “spicy” questions other AI models won’t.
  2. XAI’s creation of a less politically correct chatbot comes at a time when most other big AI companies are working to make their own chatbots even more PC.
  3. Last Monday, Twitter/X owner and xAI founder Elon Musk announced that Grok would soon go open source, making its source code freely available for anyone to access and modify.
  4. Unlike other chatbots, though, it can access information in real-time through X (formerly Twitter) and is programmed to respond to edgy and provocative questions with witty and “rebellious” answers.
  5. While Musk has never officially confirmed the meaning of Grok’s name, he posted “Stranger in a Strange Land” on X the day after Grok was announced, likely referencing Heinlein’s book.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and you’ll see a section called “Early Access to Grok”. For example, it can suggest recipes from a photo of an open bitcoin does consume a lot of energy refrigerator, or make predictions based on what is happening in a corresponding picture. While it is used in the same ways as other AI chatbots, “Grok will probably say ‘yes’ to a lot more jobs that you give it,” said Sharon Gai, an author and speaker who focuses on the AI industry. XAI is the name of the American startup company which was founded by Elon Musk in March 2023.

Model Details

Both the $16-a-month plan and the $168 annual plan give you early access to Grok. This move comes just weeks after Musk sued Grok competitor OpenAI for not being open source. Musk previously sat on the ChatGPT creator’s board of directors, as well as invested several million dollars into the AI research company. “Grok is a 314-billion parameter Mixture-of-Experts model trained from scratch by xAI,” wrote xAI.

Grok-2 Beta Release

This means that the model is not fine-tuned for any specific application, such as ethereum wakes up as chinese institution hops on the crypto bus 2020 dialogue. While Elon Musk has not confirmed the meaning of Grok’s name, it is believed to be a reference to the 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein, where the term “grok” is believed to have originated. The book’s main character, a Martian, uses the word as a verb to convey a profound and intuitive understanding of something. As previously mentioned, the biggest selling point for Grok is its ability to give more humorous and witty answers. With more of a personality and sense of humor, Grok may prove to be a much more entertaining AI for users to interact with.

“It’s a book on philosophy, disguised as a book on humor,” Musk said in an interview with computer scientist and podcaster Lex Fridman. Grok’s sense of humor and “personality” was modeled after The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, one of Musk’s favorite books. For instance, I asked Grok “What are your AI predictions for 2024?” Both versions spit out similar answers like AI-driven healthcare and automating business operations. Depending on what you ask, different versions of Grok can generate their own unique responses.
